How to Have Fun Not at the Expense of Other People
The deeper I get into environmentalism, the less fun things seem. The seriousness of the situation on Earth takes over and I feel overwhelmed by the need to TAKE SERIOUS ACTION NOW! I always think of the chorus from Kanye’s song Addiction: “Why does everything bad make me feel so good?” I recently found out chocolate is the second worst food for the environment after meat. Fuck.
We need to keep the fun in our lives. We need to enjoy the planet we are saving. But how can we do this without hurting others? The philosophy to accomplish this I’m naming “Circular Positive Impact Actions.” It’s a mouth-full and I purposely didn’t tweak it.
We can’t change the world if we focus on just the difficult things that we don’t enjoy. We need to evolve how we do the things we love.
Look at your actions as a circle. They have impact and can have positive results if you follow them all the way around. As complex as this sounds, it’s simple to apply. I think the best way to explore is through the things you find fun and love.
Example: you are a foodie and enjoy cooking. You might start a meal by thinking about what you’re in the mood for or what is “Trending” on IG. Then you go to the supermarket, buy the ingredients and make it. Even if you buy organic and make it vegan there is still a carbon footprint, things might be wrapped in thin film plastics and you may have no idea where many ingredients were farmed or processed. Most likely, this pleasurable afternoon in the kitchen has had a negative impact on our biosphere.
Applying “Circular Positive Impact Action” to the same situation is simple. Find a local farm, farmers’ market or CSA and begin buying things that are in season. Make that the inspiration for what you cook. You can make an equally good meal, but this time supporting a local farm.
You’ll know how the food was grown, and the carbon footprint will be smaller.
The key is to unpack anything you love, and evolve the way you do it so you aren’t
having fun at the expense of other people.
